Hey people of the Burnish diaspora ... anybody up for a new story contest? I could start one if y'all want. It'll keep me from doing, you know, actual work. :)

Memories (A Second Sequel)
It was twenty years ago just the other day
Although it didn't feel that long
Something happened that made me go
To a place where time gave way
The tears stained the yellow of the page
My mind raced as I read the words
I only had a name to work with
And a memory that knows no age
There was nothing about it that was familiar
The name was all I knew about her
But something unspoken told me one thing
It was "Sixteen Parkside Lane"
I knew that wasn't where she lived now
But I knew that address oh so well
I went out to the avenue to hail a cab
And the circle began anew
All through the drive into the city
My mind raced faster than the car
I got out, paid the driver my fare
Though it didn't seem I got too far
I saw a woman standing in the yard
Her face changed when her eyes met mine
She looked up at me slowly
The cycle kept rolling around
She said, "you must know Harry
I haven't heard from him in years."
I said, "I'm his son, he's gone from this world
And you, you must be Sue."
Her smile faded slowly into sadness
Her eyes grew wet with tears
All the years of missed opportunity
And a love that could never be
I wish I could have told a better story
But my father's fame is not my own
We just stood there in silence
And we didn't say anything more
She was going to be an actress
My dad was going to learn to fly
He touched his dreams, they weren't all they seemed
She played out her scene once more
Some of us find what we're looking for
But others never tried that hard
Sometimes, you don't know what you'd do
Even if you find what it is you want.
(I just listened to "Sequel" by Harry Chapin, which was, of course, a sequel to his famous song "Taxi." This is sort of continuing with the same story.)

So to start this up again...
So how about we vote which is the best story? Or we just pick someone who can do the next contest, because I don't remember a single story from last time...

So... Is there gonna be another story contest?
Sunday, April 3rd, 2005
How come every time I'm working on my thesis I wonder when the next Story Contest will be? ;-)
Procrastination, my friends.

So who won??? I'm at the edge of my seat here.
Just wanted to post under my new name, which is attached to a brand-new journal.
But who won???

Just a little plug...
Has everyone read all the stories yet? And because Bree will probably not have time to judge them just yet: just sneak one of your own in there! I'm sure she won't mind...
So especially you quiet people... come out of your caves! ;-)

Just a tiny announcement ...
I have been accepted to the University of Nebraska's Ph.D. program in English.
(Is "woo-hoo" appropriate?) Current Mood: relieved
Tuesday, March 8th, 2005
Still working on the story, I swear. I'm having a little trouble writing in the tidbit about William Shakespeare... :nervous:
Bree, you cruel woman! You had to drive our creativity to a max, didn't you... ;-)
Sunday, March 6th, 2005
I'm writing, really, I am. Give me a few more hours. I'm not sure if this story is any good at all, but I'll just finish it.
Thursday, March 3rd, 2005
While hiding in my cave, I've been working on my novel again. I'm only sharing this because I am concerned that my regular fiction writing is starting to sound way too much like the Story Contest. ;)( judge for yourselfCollapse ) Current Mood: melancholy

Methinks I have to give an extension here. ;)
I still need to read *everyone's* stories, LOL, I haven't had time to read anything...as most of you likely know I just started a new job (YAYYY thank God!), and have suddenly gone from months of unemployed sleeping to full-time bankers' hours. Gah. So yah..! Sooo...I am extending the deadline to Sunday March 6
...because I'm disorganized. ;)
That's 5 weeks people...I expect stories from everyone now! LOL! As well, YAY welcome to freezemyazaleas
, the community is growing, hooray! And Thea, this one wasn't even a result of my shameless advertising. ;) You say you liked the story contest...wellll lookee here, one just got extended, perfect time to enter! o:) ...Okay, *now* I'm shamelessly advertising. ;)
By the way, I'd just like to make a public thank-you to Farrah, for her incredibly insightful analysis of Lindsey's crotch on teh Mirage DVD. fineyenta
and I were watching that awhile back (the DVD, not the crotch...oh alright, the crotch) and we actually signed on to Burnish just so we could obtain this critical guide. ;)
Alright, I'll shut up now. :) Current Mood: bouncy
Hi everyone! I'm new here. I was kind of a lurker on burnish, but I loved the story contest. I always planned on writing an entry but I was just too lazy. I was really sad when it ended. As you can imagine, I was pleasantly surprised when I found this community. So... yeah. I look forward to participating and getting to know y'all. Current Mood: chipper

Spare a demo or two?
Anybody happen to have "Mabel Normand" or "Have No Heart" lying around? I missed "Have No Heart" when it was up a while ago, and I'm looking for them for my iPod so I can brood. Current Mood: lonely
